Why a COA matters more than a product photo or a marketing claim
A certificate of analysis is a lab-tested record of a specific production lot. It is the document that lets a procurement team verify a claim rather than take it on trust. When comparing virgin coconut oil suppliers, ask for a current COA before you compare pricing — a lower quote tied to a weaker specification is not automatically the better offer.

Parameters commonly found on a VCO certificate of analysis
The exact parameters a buyer needs depend on the intended application (food, cosmetic, or industrial), but most VCO certificates of analysis report on a similar set of tests.
- Free fatty acid (FFA) — an indicator of oil freshness and processing quality.
- Moisture and volatile matter — relevant to shelf life and stability.
- Peroxide value — an indicator of early oxidation.
- Color — typically reported on a Lovibond or similar scale.
- Fatty acid profile — confirms the oil matches the expected coconut oil composition.
- Microbiological results — relevant for food-grade and cosmetic-grade buyers.
How to read the numbers in context
A COA reflects one tested lot, not a permanent guarantee for every future shipment. Ask whether the certificate you have been sent matches the lot that will actually be shipped, and whether testing was performed in-house or by an independent laboratory. If a parameter is critical to your finished product, state your required range in writing rather than relying on the supplier's default specification sheet.
