Coco Coir
Coconut Fiber and Coco Coir from Indonesia
Coco fiber is the coarse strand material that sits between the hard shell and the outer skin of the coconut. The husk is steeped in hot seawater, then the fiber is combed and crushed out of it, much the same way jute is processed.
Strand length is what determines where it ends up. Longer, stronger brown fiber from ripe coconuts goes into upholstery and mattress filling, geotextile mats for erosion control, and sacking. Shorter and finer white fiber from unripe husks goes into brushes, rope, and fishing net.
We bale at 95 to 130 kilograms and load around 197 bales into a 40ft high cube, which works out at roughly 18 metric tons. Our fiber has gone to buyers in Korea, Malaysia, Japan, and Turkey, and we quote against humidity and strand length rather than a grade name that means something different in every market.
