Why a cocopeat specification needs more than block weight
A compressed cocopeat block can look similar across suppliers while performing differently after hydration. Buyers should evaluate the growing-media requirement as a whole: raw material, washing process, electrical conductivity (EC), pH range, expansion, particle mix, and packaging.

Understand EC in the context of your crop
EC is commonly used to indicate the soluble salt level in a hydrated growing medium. A low-EC requirement may be important for sensitive crops or a particular nutrient program, while other applications can use a different target. Ask the supplier how EC is measured, including the extraction method and sample preparation.
Do not compare EC figures alone. Request the target pH, buffering or washing details where relevant, and a recent analysis method so the figures can be interpreted consistently.
Specify compression and expansion clearly
Block dimensions and dry weight determine container loading and warehouse handling, but growers also need an expected hydrated volume. State the desired dry dimensions, tolerances, and the method used to measure expansion. This is more useful than relying only on a marketing claim about liters per block.
- Dry block size and net weight tolerance.
- Expected expansion method and hydrated volume range.
- Particle mix, such as peat, chips, fiber, or a blended ratio.
- Moisture target at packing and storage conditions.
Compression levels compared
These are general industry ranges to guide your specification discussion, not a guaranteed output for every batch. Confirm the expansion ratio and hydrated volume with your supplier using your own hydration method.

Plan packaging and phytosanitary requirements early
Export packaging should be selected with the destination country, container transit, and the buyer's repacking process in mind. Ask about bale, pallet, or carton configuration; outer wrapping; labels; and traceability codes. If the market has plant-health, import-permit, or phytosanitary rules, share them before production is scheduled.
Use samples to validate the production requirement
A sample is most informative when it is tested using the same hydration, EC, pH, and crop procedures that will be used commercially. Record the result and approve a retained sample or specification sheet before scaling to a container order.
