Copra vs Desiccated Coconut: Which Is Right for Oil Extraction

Why copra remains the standard feedstock for coconut oil extraction, and when desiccated coconut is used instead.

Both come from mature coconut meat, but they're processed for different purposes

Copra and desiccated coconut both start from mature coconut kernel, but they are dried and processed differently because they serve different downstream purposes. Copra is dried with oil extraction in mind; desiccated coconut is dried, and often graded and cut, for direct food use.

See our dried copra product page and desiccated coconut product page for available formats.

Why copra remains the standard for oil extraction

Copra is produced and priced specifically as an oil-extraction feedstock, with a drying process and moisture target suited to pressing efficiency and oil yield rather than food-grade sensory quality. This is reflected in copra pricing, which tracks coconut oil markets closely, and in the scale at which copra is traded as a bulk commodity.

When desiccated coconut is used for oil instead

Desiccated coconut is a higher-cost, food-grade product, so using it purely as an oil-extraction feedstock is uncommon and generally not cost-effective compared to copra. It occasionally enters oil production as a byproduct stream (for example, off-spec material) rather than as a primary planned feedstock.

 • If your goal is oil extraction at scale, request a copra quotation, not desiccated coconut.
 • If your goal is a food ingredient, desiccated coconut's grading and food-safety documentation (see our grade guide) is the relevant specification, not copra's oil-extraction specification.

Tell us your end use so we quote the right product

Because the two products serve different purposes, the most useful first step in an inquiry is stating whether your end product is oil, a food ingredient, or something else. Contact Cocopany's export team with your intended use and target volume. If oil is your goal, see our copra-to-coconut-oil extraction process guide.
