In soil-based growing, some variation in a growing medium is buffered by the surrounding system. In hydroponics, where the grower controls the nutrient solution precisely, an unspecified or inconsistent coco peat can throw off EC and pH targets that took real effort to dial in. This makes specification more important, not less.

EC and buffering matter more in hydroponics

Unwashed or poorly buffered coco peat can carry residual salts (particularly potassium and sodium) that interfere with a hydroponic nutrient program. Ask specifically whether the coco peat has been washed and buffered with calcium, and request the EC figure along with the test method and extraction ratio used.

• Request the EC value and how it was measured (extraction ratio and method).
• Ask whether the product has been calcium-buffered to displace residual sodium and potassium.
• Confirm the pH range and whether it has been adjusted or is a natural result of processing.

Particle consistency affects irrigation behavior

Hydroponic systems, especially drip and ebb-and-flow setups, depend on a growing medium with consistent particle size and structure for even water and nutrient distribution. Ask about the particle mix (fiber, chips, and fine peat ratio) and whether it is consistent batch to batch, not just for a single sample.

Validate with your own nutrient program before scaling

Test a sample with your actual nutrient solution and monitoring equipment before committing to a container order, since EC and pH behavior can differ from the supplier's reported figures once your specific fertigation program is applied.
