How food-grade and cosmetic-grade RBD coconut oil differ in specification and documentation, and what to ask your supplier.
The oil may be similar, but the documentation isn't
RBD coconut oil produced for food and RBD coconut oil produced for cosmetic use can come from a very similar refining process, but the required documentation, testing, and sometimes the packaging and handling differ. Confirm which category your application falls into before requesting a quotation.

Food-grade considerations
Food-grade buyers typically need documentation aligned with food-safety systems (such as HACCP), and may require specific parameters like free fatty acid, moisture, peroxide value, and microbiological limits tied to their finished product category — cooking oil, ice cream, confectionery, or oleochemical feedstock.
Cosmetic-grade considerations
Cosmetic and personal-care buyers may prioritize different parameters, such as color consistency, odor neutrality, and compatibility with specific formulation processes, and may require documentation aligned with cosmetic regulatory frameworks in their destination market rather than food-safety systems alone.
- Confirm which certifications and test parameters your regulatory team requires.
- Ask whether the same production line and equipment are used for both grades, and how changeover is controlled.
- Request a COA that reflects the parameters relevant to your category, not a generic sheet.
One supplier, two different requests
It's reasonable to ask one supplier for both a food-grade and cosmetic-grade quotation if you serve both markets, but treat them as separate specifications with separate documentation rather than assuming one COA covers both use cases.
