Four properties worth testing before you buy
These are the properties most directly tied to the shisha user's experience, and the ones most reasonable to request in a specification sheet or sample test.
- Ash content — lower ash generally means a cleaner, longer session with less residue in the bowl.
- Burn time — how long a single piece lasts under normal use, tested rather than estimated.
- Density and hardness — affects how evenly the briquette burns and how much it crumbles in transit.
- Odor and smoke — the binder used can affect smell; ask what binder is used and whether it is disclosed for destination-market compliance.
Test under the conditions your customers will actually use
Burn samples in the same type of burner or charcoal heater your customers use, not just on an open flame, since heat-up behavior differs between methods. Record ash residue, burn duration, and any off-odor so the result can be compared across suppliers on the same basis.
Check size consistency and packaging separately
Size and shape consistency affects both burn behavior and how the product looks in retail packaging. Ask about size tolerance, breakage rate after container transit, and whether packaging (retail box, bulk carton, or both) matches your market's expectations.
